Sleigh & Wagon Rides

sleigh_rides_540X300

Sleigh Ride

No visit to the Northwoods is complete without an old fashioned sleigh ride! Our team of Percherons, Tracy and Sid, and Belgian, Blaze, will pull you on our exclusive vis a vis sleigh, with black velvet cushions and cozy blankets. The sleigh seats four adults comfortably in the back, children can ride on laps, or up front with the driver! Or hop aboard our hand crafted red bob-sleigh, which seats up to 12 passengers and is great for bigger groups. Better yet, consider the ultimate winter experience–a horse drawn sleigh ride and dog sled tour–exclusive to Outdoor (ed)Ventures! Before the snow arrives, join us for a wagon ride!

Sleigh rides are offered 7 days a week and last approximately 40-45 minutes. While advanced reservations are recommended, especially on weekends and holidays, we can often accommodate same day requests–just call! All sleigh rides are private party–you’ll only ride with the people in your group. To make a reservation, please call 218-391-0147 or e-mail info@outdooredventures.org. A 50% deposit will reserve your spot. Pay with cash, check, Visa, MasterCard or Discover.

Our sleigh season runs from mid-December through mid-March. We are located “over the hill” from Duluth, where there is more snow than near Lake Superior. Please call if you have questions about snow conditions. Outdoor (ed)Ventures is located 15 miles north of Duluth, about 25-30 minutes from Duluth, 40-45 minutes from Two Harbors and approximately 3 hours from the Twin Cities. Upon receipt of your deposit, you will receive detailed directions to find us!

Sleigh and wagon rides are available on site or we can come to you. We are leaders in hands on draft horse educational programs for all ages and offer half or full day driving clinics, draft horse day camps for youth in grades 2-8 as well as horse logging demonstrations, instruction and services.

Dog Sledding

dogsledding_540X300

Dog Sledding

Dog sledding is a magical experience that Blake and Steph are proud to share. Since 1993, our friendly Alaskan husky sled dogs have introduced thousands of people to dog sledding with wagging tails and unmatched enthusiasm.

Choose from 2 hours to a full day of mushing. There is no minimum or maximum age, but children 2 and under are free with a paying adult, and can ride on an adult’s lap. Children, some as young as 3 years old, enjoy standing on the runners with us as they help drive the team!

Custom overnight dog sledding or skijoring winter camping and fishing trips are available. We are also the only dog sledding kennel in the region that offers horse drawn sleigh rides. Don’t forget to ask us about bringing the dog teams to your location for a special event or program.

Our tours are offered 7 days a week. While advanced reservations are recommended, especially for holidays and weekends, give us a call–we can often accommodate same day inquiries. Dog sledding tours are private party–you’ll only mush with the people you bring to insure a high quality, hands on experience. Our sleds carry 1-2 adult passengers, 1 adult and 1-2 children, or up to three children.

Outdoor (ed)Ventures offers scenic trails that rival the beauty of the Boundary Waters and include forests, bogs and frozen lakes. Start out as a passenger as we leave from the kennel–during the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to drive the sled with a guide as your coach, or just relax in the basket and enjoy the ride. We also offer a drive your own team option.

Our season runs from early-mid-December through mid-late March. Call about conditions if you are in the area during the beginning or end of the season. Outdoor (ed)Ventures is located “over the hill” from Duluth and has more snow–we’ll advise you of snow and ice conditions, which may be very different than near Lake Superior. Outdoor (ed)Ventures is located just 15 miles north of Duluth (a 25-30 minute drive), 40-45 minutes from Two Harbors and approximately 3 hours from the Twin Cities. Upon receipt of your deposit or credit card information, you will receive detailed directions to find us!

The Bog Tour (2 hours) begins with a kennel tour, where you’ll meet our friendly Alaskan huskies. You’ll learn about the dogs, sleds and other mushing equipment and help harness and hook up the team. We’ll start out on our bog trail and then head to Island Lake where you’ll explore marshes, bays and the beauty of the lake. Before returning to the dog yard, enjoy forested trails to Fredenberg Lake. Upon returning, give the dogs treats and water, help bring them back to their houses. Then join Blake and Steph for hot cocoa or tea in the house, where you’ll get a tour of their wind and solar system which provides power for Outdoor (ed)Ventures. Get started at 10 am or 2 pm, or call for a custom start time. $160/adult, $100/child under 12

The Island Lake Tour (3-4 hours) starts and ends like our Bog Tour, but gives you more time on the sled to explore Island Lake, and covers 13+ miles by dog team. This tour is a great option for those looking for additional time to drive the sled or extended trail time. We start at 9 am or 1 pm, but custom start times are available. $200/adult, $125/child under 12

A Full Day of Mushing (6 hours) combines the Bog and Island Lake tours, with a break for a delicious hot lunch. Or spend half a day with the dogs and enjoy learning to drive our draft horses and sleigh. We’ll start at 10 am and finish at 4 pm. Interested in a second day? Help load up the dogs and head to new trails just down the road for an unforgettable mushing experience. $300/adult, $190/child under 12
The Family Tour (2 hours) is designed for young mushers and their families. Preschool to elementary aged children love this hands on experience. After a kennel tour, help harness your team, and head to our 1/2 mile bog loop. You’ll take turns riding in the sled, and can even hop up on the runners and try driving the team. You’ll have fantastic photo opportunities and great memories. Tours run between 9 am and 3 pm. $300/group of 4, $50/additional participant

On and off site group rates are available. We’ll create a customized Winter Sampler experience that can include dog sledding, sled dog kennel tour, horse drawn sleigh rides, snowshoeing to our cranberry bog, wood stove heated wall tent, ice safety/winter survival skills, team building, hot drinks and catered meals. Group experiences are perfect for family reunions, holiday parties, conference activities, scout groups, schools or corporate retreats. Call 218-391-0147  or e-mail info@outdooredventures.org for more information.

You’ll be amazed at the power of people and animals working together. Most important, your participation helps support our mission to provide outdoor adventure programs for youth agencies and schools. Happy trails, and see you this winter!

Rock & Ice Climbing

Rock_Climbing_540X300

Rock Climbing

Duluth and the North Shore offer fantastic climbing opportunities for beginning to advanced climbers. We climb at the Whoopie Wall, Ely’s Peak, Shovel Point at Tettegouche State Park, Carlton Peak at Temperance River State Park, Silver Cliff, Palisade Head and other remote North Shore sites.

As a non-profit, we serve thousands of youth each year. Adult and family climbing options are an important revenue stream to allow us to continue making outdoor adventure activities accessible and affordable for all youth.

Blake and Steph have over 40 years of combined climbing experience. Highlights include 13 years as a college program director – leading climbing classes, designing and managing a new climbing wall and staff, and leading youth programming and day to week long trips. Our experience also includes: Outward Bound climbing instructor, UMD club member and instructor prior to the indoor wall. We also own and operate a portable wall. We were thrilled to figure that together we have guided approximately 1,990 total outdoor climbing days, and have lost track of how many personal days locally and on trips from Alaska to Baja to Washington to North Carolina since 1976.

Child Rock Climbing

Positive Energy offers rock climbing instruction 7 days a week. While advanced reservations are recommended, especially for holidays and weekends, give us a call–we can often accommodate same day inquiries. Our Climbing Sites

Climbing Wall

Our 20′ climbing wall provides a fun introduction to rock climbing for all ages. Children as young as 3 have enjoyed the wall, which has introduced over 1,000 youth to climbing. A friendly experience for those new to the sport and a great option for those on a budget or with limited time in Duluth. Take a swim in Fredenberg Lake or enjoy a bar b que afterwards.

The Whoopie Wall in West Duluth, is the most accessible outdoor climbing area. This urban crag is perfect for beginning climbers, but offers challenge for more experienced climbers as well. The view of downtown Duluth and the harbor, including the Ariel Lift Bridge, is spectacular. Spend less time hiking and more time climbing–a great outdoor option for those on a budget or with limited time.

Ely’s Peak is another outdoor option near Spirit Mountain. In addition to climbing, you’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the St. Louis River valley, and can choose to hike to the peak on the Superior Hiking Trail. Great wildlife and a bit of Duluth history makes this a climbing destination for visitors and locals alike. The climbs, a short walk from the parking lot, range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, and are about 75 feet tall. Larger groups can enjoy hiking and climbing in the same location.

Silver Cliff, a site just north of Two Harbors on Highway 61, is about 100 feet from the shore of Lake Superior. Climbs are good for beginners, but it is not the best site for younger children. It’s an easy approach to the climbs, and the setting is gorgeous. If you are heading up the shore to go camping, it’s a quick stop to climb for a couple of hours on your way.

Palisade Head is a top-managed site for intermediate to advanced climbers who rappel from the top and climb back up. It offers the tallest climbing on the North Shore. Climbs are mostly crack climbing–a great physical and mental challenge for those with previous climbing experience. Rappelling experience is not required.

Belaying

Shovel Point is a true climbing destination. With routes for beginners and experienced climbers, Shovel Point also offers a gorgeous hike, unique natural history features, and the opportunity to explore Tettegouche State Park and Lake Superior. The cliffs are directly above Lake Superior, and climbers rappel from the top and climb back up. Shovel Point is about 1.5 hours from Duluth.

Carlton Peak, part of Temperance River State Park, offers a variety of climbing for all experience levels, and sweeping vistas of the Superior National Forest and Lake Superior. The hike to the climbs is stunning, and is

Rock climbing is a great way to see the world from a new perspective, and is suitable for children and adults. Kids make great climbers, and we’ll teach you the safety skills and techniques you need to be successful. No experience is required, and we provide equipment, including harnesses for kids. Climbing can be a great example of positive energy!

Schedule your climbing experience or register your child for one of our youth climbing camps by calling 218.391.0147 or e-mail info@outdooredventures.org.

FAQs:

At what age can kids start climbing?

We don’t have a minimum age for kids who want to start climbing. Kids as young as 2 and 3 years old have climbed on our portable climbing wall. We provide full body harnesses for very small children.

How much time should I plan for a climbing outing?

It differs per location and group size. Length can vary from one hour to an all day or multiple day trip.

What about safety?

Statistically, driving your car is the most dangerous part of your climbing outing. We provide highly trained climbing staff with years of experience, daily equipment inspection and all the necessary and high quality gear to ensure your safety. We have never had a major incident. However you may expect scrapes or sore muscles after a good day climbing.

What kinds of people climb?

People are motivated to climb for many different reasons, from enjoying the beautiful scenery, to getting to know your group, to testing your physical and mental limits to just trying something new. Climbing doesn’t have to be an extreme sport, anyone can try it! Feel free to talk with us if you might require special accomodation.
